Breaking a key inside a lock happens more often than you'd think — especially with old, worn keys. Here's how to handle it.

Don't Try to Force It

The worst thing you can do is try to push or pull the broken piece further into the lock, or try to use the remaining stub to operate the lock. Either can jam the key fragment deeper and make extraction much harder.

DIY Options (Proceed with Caution)

Needle-Nose Pliers If part of the key is sticking out, very fine needle-nose pliers can sometimes grab it. Apply gentle, straight-out pressure — no twisting.

Broken Key Extractor Tool Available at hardware stores, these hook-shaped tools are designed to catch the key's teeth and pull it out. They work reasonably well if the key isn't too far in.

Lubricant A small amount of WD-40 or graphite spray can help the key slide out more easily. Don't over-apply.

When to Call a Locksmith

If the key is fully inside the lock, DIY methods are unlikely to work without damaging the lock. Call a locksmith. LockAngeles LA can extract broken keys from most lock types without damaging the cylinder. We can then cut you a new key on the spot.
